The Importance of Exercise in the Management of Arthritis

Why exercise?

Doctors and therapists know that people with arthritis can improve their health and fitness through exercise without hurting their joints.

A new study, published in the April 2005 issue of Arthritis and Rheumatology, goes a step further in finding that exercise will protect against the progression of arthritis.

Regular exercise helps keep joints moving, restores and preserves flexibility and strength, and protects joints against further damage. Exercise also improves coordination; increases endurance and the ability to perform daily tasks - such as walking or writing; reduces fatigue and increases energy; and leads to an improved sense of self-esteem and accomplishment.

The advantages of water exercise

Water exercise is rapidly growing in popularity. Exercise enthusiasts, athletes, the elderly, and the physically challenged are discovering the benefits of aquatic exercise programs. An advantage of aquatic exercise is that it can involve the upper and lower extremities through optimal ranges of motion while minimizing joint stress. Weight bearing, land-based exercise presents a challenge to the joints and soft tissues of the body: repetitious ground striking imposes a strain on the tissues and could lead to injury. The buoyant force of water, however, results in up to a 90% reduction in body weight. Because of the cushioning effect of water, individuals potentially at risk to bodily stress from weight-bearing exercise, such as the elderly, the obese, individuals with a soft tissue injury, or those with joint problems, may find water to be the most desirable environment for exercise. Yet, at the same time, water is capable of providing a full-body resistance.

Water exercise: safe and beneficial

Water exercise is a gentle way to exercise joints and muscles. Water supports joints and lessens stress on them to encourage free movement. It also provides mild resistance to help build muscle strength.

The soothing warmth and buoyancy of water make for a safe and ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness, and improving the range of motion of joints affected by arthritis. Immersion in warm water raises your body temperature, causes blood vessels to dilate and increases circulation.
